The esports world has been abuzz with discussion following a recent report on the partnership structure of the Valorant Champions Tour, specifically VCT China. Citing the specialized esports outlet Sheep Esports, the report states that Riot Games plans to reduce the number of partner teams in the China region from ten to eight in the 2027–2028 cycle. This change is reportedly not exclusive to China; the same reduction is expected to apply across the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific regions. The most important caveat, however, is that Riot Games has not yet officially confirmed this lineup or format. As a result, this analysis is conducted on the basis of a single-source structural report.
The first VCT China partnership cycle began in 2026 and will conclude after the 2026 season. This means 2027–2028 will be the second cycle, making slot reallocation a normal and planned process. According to the report, the second-cycle partners could include EDward Gaming, Xi Lai Gaming, Weibo Gaming, JD Gaming, Bilibili Gaming, TYLOO, All Gamers, and Trace Esports. Meanwhile, FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club, Wolves Esports, and Dragon Ranger Gaming may not secure a spot in the next cycle.
The biggest surprise is Weibo Gaming's return. After missing a partner slot in 2026, they exited VALORANT and only returned in early 2026. The report includes them as a partner, suggesting a prioritization of commercial and brand value. Conversely, Wolves Esports, despite a surprise showing at Masters Toronto 2026, is reportedly set to lose its slot. The combination of these two events has created a clear tension between merit and commerce.
EDward Gaming's inclusion, however, is the least contentious. They won the Champions 2026 title, which is considered China's only international trophy since the current circuit began. Xi Lai Gaming's rise also validates the merit pathway. They won Ascension 2026, converted a guest slot into partner status, and have attended every international LAN since Masters Toronto 2026.
The report also states that China's format may differ from the other three regions, and the qualification rules for non-partner teams remain unclear. Riot has indicated it wants to make 2027 a more open competitive year. However, reducing the number of partners while simultaneously introducing an open qualification system may seem contradictory unless the non-partner pathway is genuinely functional.
A reduction in slots could increase revenue share for the eight surviving partners, offering them a commercial advantage. But for the excluded teams, it represents a serious financial blow. FunPlus Phoenix, Nova, and Titan are long-standing partners, and their exclusion could signal a generational turnover in Chinese esports. The inclusion of brand-scale teams like Weibo and JDG, meanwhile, suggests an emphasis on financial stability.
From a governance perspective, Riot is simultaneously the rule-maker, commercial stakeholder, and slot allocator. There is no independent third party overseeing partner selection. Riot has not yet confirmed the lineup or format, leaving the selection criteria opaque. This lack of transparency could create credibility pressure in the future.
Fan community reaction is still limited because the report is not a confirmed announcement. However, there could be backlash over Wolves' exclusion and the omission of traditional brands like FunPlus Phoenix and Nova. Chinese VALORANT fans may view this as a scene reset.
Overall, the risk level is medium. The three main risks are the lack of transparency, financial losses for excluded teams, and source uncertainty. The VCT China 2027 cycle is therefore an important test of Riot's future strategy and the Chinese esports market.
